Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity (NIPP)
DNA test performed during pregnancy to determine the biological father of an unborn child
Service Description
Non-invasive prenatal paternity (NIPP) testing is a DNA test performed during pregnancy to determine the biological father of an unborn child. This test is called "non-invasive" because it involves a simple blood draw from the pregnant mother and a cheek swab from the alleged father(s), rather than more invasive procedures like amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS). This test can be performed as early as the 7th week of pregnancy. IMPORTANT: If the mother has had a blood transfusion, sample collection must be done no earlier than one week after the transfusion. ***We cannot perform NIPP testing in the following cases: twins or multiple fetuses, in vitro fertilization, egg donation, surrogacy, related alleged fathers (unless both are willing to be tested), or cases of incest.***
